What does EMEA stand for?

If you are dealing with businesses, government or sales  & marketing it is likely that you have already come across the abbreviation EMEA and if not, you soon will. It is banded around meetings without explanation because it is so commonly used.

It quite simply stands for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Some companies also refer to EMEIA, Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa. You then have several groupings of The Americas and Asia.

Why group Europe, the Middle East and Africa?

Whilst the grouping includes a host of countries all incredibly different in culture, the culture between the Americas and Asia is so vast that the rest of the world can be grouped together on relative similarities. The other significant reason is time difference. If you are based in the UK  and are given an area to look after, it is possible to service customers in the EMEA region without having to keep yourself awake during the night. It would be no mean feat to be dedicated to looking after EMEA and the Americas at the same time and so these abbreviated regions are often used in terms of responsibility and strategy.
